John Putnam is an Arizona author and stargazer who recently settled down near Ellen Fields - his girlfriend who happens to teach school nearby - though this life doesn't exactly go down smoothly within their small Arizona desert town, nor with Sheriff Matt Warren who seems protective over Ellen (though more is revealed as time goes on). John feels no trust from these neighbors despite their best attempts.
